This is a great book about some of the great female speeches that have been given. They’re often not included in books about speeches, and this book included some women I had not heard of.
Butterfly – Yusra Mardini
A fascinating look at a swimmer from Syria and her escape to Germany.
7×10 Bad Santa
David Suchet in the Footsteps of St Peter
I LOVE these movies. I also love how every time Jeff Goldblum stars in anything, he’s playing Jeff Goldblum.
The Lost World
Loved Jeff Goldblum in this. This was the only sequel I really enjoyed.
The Thin Man
These movies are classics for all the right reasons. Love Myrna Loy and William Powell together.
After the Thin Man
This is my favourite Thin Man movie. It is absolutely hilarious and you can completely tell that William Powell and Myrna Loy would often ad lib things in the movie.
2×08 Death of a Child: Love Rex with the logs of wood at home and then saving the little boy
11×09 Kill Beale Volume 1: Eric was a complete star in this and I loved the bit at the end with him dancing. So mad about this Nell/Hetty rift. They are literally my favourite relationship on the show.
11×10 Mother: So, so good. Did not care for Nell’s nasty snark at Hetty. LOVED Deeks riding the door out of the building.
6×01 Fallout: Oh hello evil Laurel. You are so much more fun when you’re evil. And Thea’s in a coma. Because of course she is.
Sorry again for another double-up, but we had an unexpected loss in the family. Some of these are episodes I’ve watched before, but we’re rewatching for Christmas.
How to Make Money With Social Media – Jamie Turner and Reshma Shah:Interesting, but not something I’m really into exploring at the moment
Nine Pints – Rose George: This was absolutely fascinating and a little terrifying at the same time. I’ve noticed I read a lot of books like that this fortnight.
Twisted 26 – Janet Evanovich: This was great, and I loved having so much Grandma Mazur in it. She’s so much fun.
Daring to Drive – Manal Al-Sharif:This was interesting and terrifying at the same time.
Women and Power – Mary Beard: Taken from her lectures, this was an interesting read that looked at women’s power right back in the Western canon of literature.
The Witches Are Coming – Lindy West: I loved this book and it was so interesting
The Joyful Frugalista – Serina Bird:Got some helpful tips from this book – not often you find one of these types of books that focuses on Australia.
4×01 The Flash Reborn: Such a good episode
NCIS Los Angeles
11×05 Provenance: One of the funniest episodes they’ve ever done. When Sam picked up the art thief and she just kept running – we couldn’t stop laughing!
11×06 A Bloody Brilliant Plan: Loved seeing Jennifer Kim again
11×07 Concours D’Elegance – love Nell and Fatima. Liked seeing Katherine again.
11×08 Human Resources
3×17 Pa’ani: Loved this episode. The show is at its best like this.
2×07 Dangerous Hunt: Rex saves the day again!
6×10 Leaving the Station: Now THIS is the show I’ve been missing. The wedding was perfect. Bringing everyone back was great (still missed Kat and Nadine). So glad to see Chen there too. This is the show we missed. I’m just sorry it took until the last two episodes of the final season to see it again.
16×08 Friendly Fire
According to Jeff Goldblum
1×03 Tattoos: I didn’t know about tattoos and the immune system, so now I’m even more freaked out about them.
Hercule Poirot and the Theft of the Royal Ruby
First Christmas program of the season.
Hercule Poirot’s Christmas
These are great little programs
The Addams Family
This is the 1990s version and the best. We always watch this at Christmas.
2×15 Curve Ball – Christmas episodes! I love these dorks.
1×10 Brimstone – I can’t believe how young they all are. It was nice seeing Nate and more of Hetty.
2×11 Disorder – Nell and Hetty are excellent together.
3×11 Higher Power – Nell and Hetty are the gift that keeps on giving.
4×10 Free Ride – Nell is elfin awesome
5×12 Merry Evasion – Nellverine in the field!
2×09 The Map of Moments – I love this episode, even though we only get a glimpse of Freya.
6×11 Silent Night
8×10 False Witness – Tony’s prank at the end gets me every time!
1×12 Hana a’a Makehewa
2×13 Secret Santa – I love these dorks
3×14 Next of Kin
3×15 Next of Kin Part 2
6×13 Living Proof Part 1
6×14 Living Proof Part 2 – It’s fun watching Flynn and Raydor interact before they’re together
1×07 Let Your Hair Down – First look at Monroe’s epic Christmas decorations
Double up this week due to much Christmas decoration on the 1st 🙂
Confessions of a Public Speaker – Scott Berkun: I found this really insightful and helpful. I like hearing examples about this sort of thing, rather than just steps of what to do.
Sawbones – Jason and Sydnee McElroy:This book is based on a podcast, which I hadn’t heard of. But I am interested in medical history and some of the weird things that have been done, so I found it interesting. I did find the writing style a bit annoying, but still interesting nonetheless.
Four Princesses – Helen Rappaport: So much has been written on the Romanovs, but I’ve never read a lot about the other sisters (Anastasia is often written about). It was a fascinating look at the lives they led, and tragically they had so much to offer the world when they were killed. I also did not know that most of the loyal entourage – including tutors and guards – were also shot. The book reads to give the idea that the Romanovs had no idea what was about to happen to them the night they were shot, and I hope that was the case. It was fascinating to read about the princesses – Anastasia was a firebrand, Tatiana was an excellent nurse. I was also fascinated to read that Nicholas and Alexandra were determined their daughters should marry for love – so rare at that time. All in all it was an excellent book, yet tragic that such an unnecessary thing happened to them
Am I Ugly? – Michelle Elman: I went into this book expecting one thing and ending up with another. I have followed her on Instagram for quite a while. I was disappointed in her opinion on psychiatrists vs psychologists – I have had the opposite experience. It was a quick read – read it in one night.
According to Jeff Goldblum
1×01 Sneakers – I love Jeff Goldblum so I loved this. Fascinating by how much testing goes into a sneaker.
1×02 Ice-Cream – Yes. Just yes to this whole episode.
2×01 So Nathan is basically a male version of Amanda Jones
2×02 Leyla is a badass
2×03 This show is getting weird
NCIS Los Angeles
10×15 Smokescreen Part 2 – Well this was a much less dark episode.
10×16 Into the Breach – Love Mama Deeks. And Nicole Du Champs is awesome
10×17 Til Death Do Us Part – All hail Hetty Lange. Great episode. I did and still do want a scene with just Hetty and Mama Deeks. Kindergarten Cop reunion, anyone?
10×18 Born to Run – Badass Nell is my favourite Nell. Also, Eric being upset that Nell kissed another guy was beneath that character. He knows she was on the run, trying to keep the asset safe.
10×19 Searching – Love Jake. Glad to see him back.
10×20 Choke Point – All Hail Hetty. Seriously, she’s fabulous.
10×21 The One That Got Away – I love Arkady! So glad we got to see more of him in this episode than the last one he was in
10×22 No More Secrets – Joelle and Anna hanging out together is creepy
10×23 The Guardian – The JAG theme playing as Harm appeared took me right back!
10×24 False Flag – The JAG theme playing as Mac appeared! I’ve missed these weirdoes. But wow – way to kill the Harm and Mac fandom’s dreams. Ouch!
11×01 Let Fate Decide – What kind of ending for Harm and Mac was that about? We only waited for them to get together for TEN YEARS. And then there was the 9 years that apparently they weren’t together. And now they’re not together again? COME ON!!
11×02 Decoy – This episode was okay, but it was very disjointed.
11×03 Hail Mary – This episode was hilarious. This is the show we need and the show I signed up for.
11×04 Yellow Jack – First of all, love Fatima and Navid. So happy to see them both again. Also, uh, Kensi and Deeks – shouldn’t you have had this kid discussion BEFORE you got married? Just a thought.
6×08 Ships and Countries: Who’s writing this? The Stevie/Dmitri argument was beneath this show and so is a lot of the things happening with Madam President
6×09 Carpe Diem – Oh look! This is where my show has gone! This is the first episode of this season that has felt like my show. The engagement! And the chanting – what Hilary deserved.
1×06 Flight Risk – Ah, we finally hear Irene’s name.
1×07 One Way To Get Off
The Good Place
4×06 A Chip Driver Mystery – Oh good lord that book. Jason teaching Chidi to do something spontaneous was fabulous, as was his song. Bad Janet’s comment on people who don’t vaccinate their kids made me laugh.
4×07 Help is Other People – The line about Janet violently consuming Janet babies made me laugh out loud.
5×06 The Travel Agency – Another not terrible episode. Keep it up.
5×07 The Kilgannon Corporation (No.43) – They’re still writing good episodes. I’ve missed this show being this good.
3×16 Kekoa Damn Summer Glau can fight. I saw a bit of River (Firefly) and Isobel (Arrow) coming out there. Also, I love Kamekona.
2×06 The Blind Witness – Loved Rex helping the blind woman and so glad she got her own baby Rex.
16×7 A Thousand Words – I loved the street art and especially Ritz’s painting of Gibbs and Bishop
Jane Austen at Home – Lucy Worsley: This was a really interesting take on Jane Austen from the perspective of the places she lived. I also learned a couple of things – like me, she had facial pain, and scholars believe it likely she had depression
Around the World in 80 Trains – Monisha Rajesh: I’ve traveled long distance by train once – 6 hours from Salzburg to Venice, through a blizzard. Not something I was interested in doing, but it’s interesting to hear someone who enjoys train rides go on a journey around the world in them.
5×14 Something Better
5×15 Between the Seats – This was a sad episode
5×16 The New Normal – Thanks for breaking my heart with Gordon
5×17 The Common Defence – VACCINATE YOUR KIDS!
5×19 The Great Experiment
The Originals (Parents First Watch)
4×13 The Feast of All Sinners – How am I crying the SECOND time I watch this?
5×01 Where You Left Your Heart – They like teenage Hope. And Caroline. And Amnesia!Elijah. They felt sorry for Marcel when Rebekah turned him down. And mum was a bit peeved when Klaus started killing off the roses by visiting Amnesia!Elijah
5×02One Wrong Turn on Bourbon – Felt so sorry for Freya. I love her friendship with Vincent. Mum was very sad about Henry.
5×03 Ne Me Quitte Pas – Mum likes Amnesia!Elijah piano-playing in France
5×04 Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea – They liked the teamup between Klaus and Marcel. And they feel Hope has a little of her father in her. They still haven’t guessed who has Hayley.
5×05 Don’t It Just Break Your Heart – Well they HATE Greta. And they were surprised by Antoinette’s and Roman’s connection to her.
5×06 What, Will, I, Have, Left – They were shocked that Declan was related to Cami!
5×07 God’s Gonna Trouble the Water – They didn’t expect the first-born curse of the Hollow. And they sincerely dislike Emmett.
3×14 Hana I Wa ‘Ia – So glad to know that Danny and Grace will stay together.
3×23 Finish Line – Glad Iris and Caitlin are going to be okay. So glad we’re going to get to keep Killer Frost. I admit to shedding a tear when Barry went into the speed force with his mother.
Inspector (Kommisar) Rex
2×04 Deadly Seduction – I love how Rex is refusing to let that woman anywhere near Moser.
16×04 Third Wheel – I don’t like Brooks horning in on my Gibbs/Fornell time. Also, Izzy can go away permanently.
NCIS Los Angeles
10×02Superhuman – That suit is terrifying. And while I love Admiral Kilbride, I miss Hetty.
Shorter one this week, because I’ll be on a plane tomorrow.
National Geographic History September/October 2019: I really enjoyed the article on Boudica.
Writer’s Tools – Roy Peter Clark – This was an interesting book that contained 55 different rules to help writers, which were expanded on in about two or three pages each. Having the expanded explanation, plus examples of how the tools can be used, was really informative.
1×01 Pilot: Watching this show from the start again because I absolutely love it. I had actually forgotten that Marcus wasn’t in the pilot.
5×02 One Wrong Turn on Bourbon – So wonderful seeing Freya and Keelin reunite, and then, as this show is very good at, they ripped them apart again. I wish they’d included the deleted scene with Vincent comforting Freya.
5×03 Ne Me Quitte Pas – Oh Elijah, I don’t even know where to start with you.
5×04 Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea – I like Ivy. And I feel sorry for Freya.
5×05 Don’t It Just Break Your Heart – I love Jaime Murray, but Antoinette is just annoying. It’s so weird to see Elijah this way, although it is an interesting technique by the writers because you wonder if he would have been like this without his family.
5×06 What, Will, I, Have, Left – Well that episode was painful. I cried. Again.
5×07 God’s Gonna Trouble the Water – And I kept crying. Honestly, what is this show doing to me? The one bright spark was Keelin returning to be with Freya.
5×08 The Kindness of Strangers – Well, Elijah just broke my heart. Also poor Freya. She’s really getting dumped on.
5×09 We Have Not Long To Love – Now that was a proposal. Freelin are adorable. Also, Josh is totally right about Marcel and Emmett. That being said, I’d really like someone to kill Emmett now.
5×10There In The Disappearing Light – And my wish is granted! Thank you, Hope.
5×11 Till the Day I Die – That wedding was perfect. Kind of mad at Vincent though – if Elijah was able to make it effort, Vincent should have done it too. Freya’s face when they both disappointed her was heartbreaking. As was the scene with Rebekah when she was afraid of being a danger to her own child. But the wedding was perfect. And I loved that Elijah gave Keelin and Freya the lake house that he and Hayley would have bought.
5×12 The Tale of Two Wolves – I love that Hayley told Hope to remind Elijah of their dance. It made my Helijah heart sing. And Hope is a beautiful wolf. Not ashamed to say I cried in that episode – Klaus looked so proud.
5×13 When The Saints Go Marching In – Oh wow. Well I was just in constant tears. Great finish to a great show. One of the few shows that as soon as you finish an episode, you HAVE to watch the next one.
Parents Watching The Originals
Mum and Dad have started watching The Originals and I’m enjoying their reactions. So far it’s been “When’s Rebekah getting back into her own body?” and “when does (insert character here) die?” Last night’s episode was:
2×12 Sanctuary: They both love Freya – especially when she killed the Kindred, Cassie and then told Rebekah to tell their brothers they better be on their best behaviour.
2×13 The Devil Is Damned Mum and Dad really enjoyed Finn getting blown up. I haven’t told them yet that Freya brings him back to life.
4×02 Off the Record
4×03 The Essentials – I will miss Nadine. Bebe Neuwirth is a class act.
4×04 Shutdown – Good, no more Jareth. He was getting on my nerves
4×05 Persona Non Grata – Confirmed no more Jareth. Hallelujah!
5×01 Smokey Putnam (No.30) – Yes to Samar and Aram. No to the rest.
1×07 – ALICIA CHECK YOUR PHONE!!!
1×08 – How appropriate that they find Marius hiding with the trash.
3×20 I Know Who You Are – Sometimes I just want to hug Cisco. Also Anne Dudek will forever be Cut Throat Bitch (House) to me.
3×11 Kahu – Loved Catherine kicking that guy’s ass!
Kommisar (Inspector) Rex
1×12 The Old Lady Murders – Man I love Rex. He’s adorable.
Interesting look at one of what is probably many untold stories about the Mikaelson’s through the years.
The Loss – The Originals Novel
Frankly, they just needed Freya alive in this one. This would have solved all the problems.
Wordslut – Amanda Montell
I really loved this book and the way it looks at language. It follows the traits of language that are more commonly ascribed to women, including uptalk and valley girl talking. I also like the way it investigates words that are often used to denigrate women and it is interesting to see that many of them started out as meaning quite different things.
3×02 The Linchpin
3×03 South China Sea
3×04 The Dissent Memo
3×05 The French Revolution
3×06 The Statement
3×07 Tectonic Shift
3×08 Breakout Capacity
3×09 Snap Back
3×10 The Race
2×3 – Love the new character of Jim Barney. He’s great at interviews. And Olivia’s going on a date!
2×5 – Not 100% sure about Kaye… I hope she’s not going to hurt Wendy.
2×15 They All Asked For You – Freya! And Rebekah is apparently going nuts…
2×16 Save My Soul – Still love Freya. Still dislike Jackson
2×17 Exquisite Corpse – Go Freya!
2×18 Night has a Thousand Eyes – Dahlia is terrifying, but Claudia Black is so fabulous at this role. I felt sorry for Freya at the end of the episode. Her last connection with someone who knew her before Dahlia took her is gone.
2×19 When the Levee Breaks
2×20 City Beneath the Sea
2×21 Fire With Fire – Not sure Elijah will ever forgive Klaus for what he’s done to Gia and Hayley
2×22 Ashes to Ashes – Loved this episode. Still love Freya, and glad that Klaus trusts her now. That scene of Freya saving her siblings was great.
3×01 For the Next Millennium – Love Freya. I can already tell I’m going to hate Lucien
3×02 You Hung the Moon – Hayley! Let’s not hit Freya. She’s trying to help. Loved the moment with Elijah’s confession. His devotion to Hayley is beautiful. I also surprisingly enjoyed Elijah and Jackson working together against Lucien.
3×03 I’ll See You In Hell or New Orleans – And Tristan is just as bad as Lucien
3×04 A Walk on the Wild Side – Loved seeing Elijah and Hayley dancing together.
3×05 The Axeman’s Letter – Well, Aurora is completely nuts
3×06 Beautiful Mistake – Love Freya just astral projecting in and snapping the necks of the Strix. As you do.
1×11 Escape to Death
Huaka’i Kula: I love Melanie. Seriously, she’s fantastic.
Lucy – Well, that movie was a trip. Brought up a lot of interesting questions – particularly about what would happen about using 100% of our brain capacity, and would we really want to? I do wonder about the fact that you would be aware of the subconscious things your brain does – such as filtering out the sound of your eyeballs moving, and things like that.
Uncommon Grounds – Mark Pendergast Loved this book and the history of coffee. As well as the history of how coffee made its way around the world, it also includes the history of the advertising that accompanied it and it’s interesting to see it and how unacceptable some of it would be now.
Feminists Don’t Wear Pink and Other Lies – Scarlett Curtis Great little book of essays from famous people on feminism. Particular favourite was Karen Gillan’s story of her mum protecting the little redhead with pale skin – been there!
Grimm: The Icy Touch – John Shirley Better than the last one, but still not up to the standards of the show.
The Book Smugglers of Timbuktu – Charlie English It was amazing to read about not only the people that saved the ancient manuscripts from destruction, but the history of traveling to the area.
Griffith Review 64 – The New Disruptors
1×13 Crescent City
1×14 Long Way Back Home
1×15 Le Grand Guignol
1×16 Farewell to Storyville
1×17 Moon Over Bourbon Street
1×18 The Big Uneasy: I hate Genevieve. On so many different levels.
1×19 An Unblinking Death
1×20 A Closer Walk With Thee Helijah. Genevieve improved on me momentarily. Also, Oliver is evil.
1×21 The Battle of New Orleans More Helijah. I feel we’re being spoilt so something will stop this soon, I am sure of it.
1×22 From a Cradle to a Grave What a bloodbath! But so pleased Genevieve is gone. Not so pleased that Oliver still lives…but give it time.
2×01 Rebirth Finally got rid of Francesca. FINALLY. And I knew the Helijah was too good to last. I love that the actors ship this too.
2×02 Alive and Kicking Seriously, if everyone stopped keeping secrets (Hello, Elijah), half this stuff wouldn’t happen
2×08 Lights Out
2×09 Russian Roulette
2×10 The Greater Good
2×11 Unity Node
2×12 The Middle Way
2×13 Invasive Species
2×14 Left of the Boom
2×15 Right of the Boom
2×16 Hijriyyah A much better job for Henry. Honestly, does no one think of the children?
2×17 Higher Learning
Legends of Tomorrow
1×8 Bring Me Beethoven’s Head: I cannot believe the number of people who want to steal Beethoven’s head!
2×01 Olivia Dunham is back (yes, that is what we now call her in everything) and she’s eying a lady bartender. All is right with the world. As long as she and Tench can keep Holden in line.
