Double up this week due to much Christmas decoration on the 1st 🙂

READ

A picture of my dog Rosie, sitting on a leather couch, with the book "Confessions of a Public Speaker" by Scott Berkun
Rosie with “Confessions of a Public Speaker” by Scott Berkun

Confessions of a Public Speaker – Scott Berkun: I found this really insightful and helpful. I like hearing examples about this sort of thing, rather than just steps of what to do.

Sawbones – Jason and Sydnee McElroy:This book is based on a podcast, which I hadn’t heard of. But I am interested in medical history and some of the weird things that have been done, so I found it interesting. I did find the writing style a bit annoying, but still interesting nonetheless.

Four Princesses – Helen Rappaport: So much has been written on the Romanovs, but I’ve never read a lot about the other sisters (Anastasia is often written about). It was a fascinating look at the lives they led, and tragically they had so much to offer the world when they were killed. I also did not know that most of the loyal entourage – including tutors and guards – were also shot. The book reads to give the idea that the Romanovs had no idea what was about to happen to them the night they were shot, and I hope that was the case. It was fascinating to read about the princesses – Anastasia was a firebrand, Tatiana was an excellent nurse. I was also fascinated to read that Nicholas and Alexandra were determined their daughters should marry for love – so rare at that time. All in all it was an excellent book, yet tragic that such an unnecessary thing happened to them

Am I Ugly? – Michelle Elman: I went into this book expecting one thing and ending up with another. I have followed her on Instagram for quite a while. I was disappointed in her opinion on psychiatrists vs psychologists – I have had the opposite experience. It was a quick read – read it in one night.

WATCHED

According to Jeff Goldblum

1×01 Sneakers – I love Jeff Goldblum so I loved this. Fascinating by how much testing goes into a sneaker.

1×02 Ice-Cream – Yes. Just yes to this whole episode.

Deep State

2×01 So Nathan is basically a male version of Amanda Jones

2×02 Leyla is a badass

2×03 This show is getting weird

NCIS Los Angeles

10×15 Smokescreen Part 2 – Well this was a much less dark episode.

10×16 Into the Breach – Love Mama Deeks. And Nicole Du Champs is awesome

10×17 Til Death Do Us Part – All hail Hetty Lange. Great episode. I did and still do want a scene with just Hetty and Mama Deeks. Kindergarten Cop reunion, anyone?

10×18 Born to Run – Badass Nell is my favourite Nell. Also, Eric being upset that Nell kissed another guy was beneath that character. He knows she was on the run, trying to keep the asset safe.

10×19 Searching – Love Jake. Glad to see him back.

10×20 Choke Point – All Hail Hetty. Seriously, she’s fabulous.

10×21 The One That Got Away – I love Arkady! So glad we got to see more of him in this episode than the last one he was in

10×22 No More Secrets – Joelle and Anna hanging out together is creepy

10×23 The Guardian – The JAG theme playing as Harm appeared took me right back!

10×24 False Flag – The JAG theme playing as Mac appeared! I’ve missed these weirdoes. But wow – way to kill the Harm and Mac fandom’s dreams. Ouch!

11×01 Let Fate Decide – What kind of ending for Harm and Mac was that about? We only waited for them to get together for TEN YEARS. And then there was the 9 years that apparently they weren’t together. And now they’re not together again? COME ON!!

11×02 Decoy – This episode was okay, but it was very disjointed.

11×03 Hail Mary – This episode was hilarious. This is the show we need and the show I signed up for.

11×04 Yellow Jack – First of all, love Fatima and Navid. So happy to see them both again. Also, uh, Kensi and Deeks – shouldn’t you have had this kid discussion BEFORE you got married? Just a thought.

Madam Secretary

6×08 Ships and Countries: Who’s writing this? The Stevie/Dmitri argument was beneath this show and so is a lot of the things happening with Madam President

6×09 Carpe Diem – Oh look! This is where my show has gone! This is the first episode of this season that has felt like my show. The engagement! And the chanting – what Hilary deserved.

Elementary

1×06 Flight Risk – Ah, we finally hear Irene’s name.

1×07 One Way To Get Off

The Good Place

4×06 A Chip Driver Mystery – Oh good lord that book. Jason teaching Chidi to do something spontaneous was fabulous, as was his song. Bad Janet’s comment on people who don’t vaccinate their kids made me laugh.

4×07 Help is Other People – The line about Janet violently consuming Janet babies made me laugh out loud.

The Blacklist

5×06 The Travel Agency – Another not terrible episode. Keep it up.

5×07 The Kilgannon Corporation (No.43) – They’re still writing good episodes. I’ve missed this show being this good.

Heritage Hunters

1×01

Hawaii 5-0

3×16 Kekoa Damn Summer Glau can fight. I saw a bit of River (Firefly) and Isobel (Arrow) coming out there. Also, I love Kamekona.

Inspector Rex

2×06 The Blind Witness – Loved Rex helping the blind woman and so glad she got her own baby Rex.

NCIS

16×7 A Thousand Words – I loved the street art and especially Ritz’s painting of Gibbs and Bishop

HowToOwnTheRoom1

How to Own The Room – Viv Groskop

This was a great book showing you how to won’t he room and get rid of the things that hold most women back.

The Sight – Chloe Neill

Another great one in this series – I have ordered the next one from the library

Happy Fat – Sofia Hagen

I cannot begin to tell you how much I loved this book. Just reading this book made me feel better about myself and it’s not easy to do that. I think I shall have to add a copy to my library.

WATCHED

Madam Secretary

6×05 Daisy – So glad Stevie turned up to Dmitri’s naturalisation ceremony

6×06 Deepfake – See how easy it could be, YouTube? Also, yay for Steve/Dmitri!

6×07 Accountability – Ridiculously happy Stevie/Dmitri is my favourite Stevie/Dmitri

Arrow

5×23 Lian Yu: Best thing was Nyssa vs Talia. And Nyssa won because she’s a badass.

NCIS LA

10×10 Heist – Love seeing Dina Meyer again. Oracle forever. And these were seriously the world’s most polite robbers.

10×11 Joyride – Love the Christmas bar. I’m so glad those two Navy guys are okay.

10×12 The Sound of Silence – Dear Lord, I love Mama D!

10×13 Better Angels – I cried. That was a very sad episode. I don’t need more crying episodes, I had enough of that in the final season of The Originals.

10×14 Smokescreen Part 1 – I like Fatima. But man these last two episodes have been dark!

NCIS

16×06 Beneath the Surface – Accidentally skipped an episode, but I love how suspicious Jack was of the CIA agent.

The Good Place

4×01 Girl From Arizona Part 1 – Dear Lord I love this show. I’m going to miss it so much when it’s over.

4×02 Girl From Arizona Part 2

4×03 Chillaxing – I love these cockroaches, and I was so glad to see it all come together. I felt so sorry for Eleanor though.

4×04 Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy – LOL distracting Jason with a caramel was hilarious. But then he saved the day!

4×05 Employee of the Bearimy – Derek should never be allowed to do anything

Elementary

1×05 Lesser Evils – Look at Joan saving that girl’s life! So glad Sherlock encouraged her to go with her instincts

The Blacklist

5×05 Ilyas Surkov (No 54) – This is one of the best episodes they’ve done in a while.

Hawaii 5-0

3×15 Hookman

Deep State

1×07

1×08 – What was that ending? We’re rewarding Amanda Jones for her behaviour now?

Inspector Rex

2×05 Death Wears a Mask – Love Rex saving the day. I never trust anyone who doesn’t like dogs. Also, if Moser’s vet girlfriend had any sense, she’d win over Rex first.

Rosie the black poodle with the book "Invisible Women" by Caroline Criado Perez
Rosie with “Invisible Women” by Caroline Criado Perez

Invisible Women – Caroline Criado Perez – This was a fascinating book, but at the same time it was rather terrifying. It examines how women are often ignored in data, and how the average “human” is basically a white male. It includes data on how female crash test dummies are not used, and the fact that many drug trials do not use female participants. They also look at the way a lot of important data is not segregated by sex, which means that information on the status of women in these particular areas, such as poverty, is not accurate.

Alpha Girls – Julian Guthrie – This book is a fascinating look at a group of four women who were some of the earliest venture capitalists in Silicon Valley. It follows their lives as they went through both the boom and the bust of the dot com industry, and how it affected them. Most importantly, it also shows how differently women were and still are treated in these industries.

WATCHED

Madam Secretary

5×20 Better Angels – I’m glad she’s running. But I will not forgive them for killing Peter Harriman. He turned out to be awesome.

6×01 Hail to the Chief – Glad Russell’s back, but I miss Jay and Kat

6×02 The Strike Zone – I like how they change the title card to Madam President. Also, where is Kat? And I want Steve/Dmitri to be a thing, not this idiot.

6×03 Killer Robots – still no Kat. Or Matt. Or any explanation for either.

6×04 Valor – Mental health is so important and it needs to be taken more seriously.

NCIS LA

10×03 The Prince – NELLVERINE!! My Queen! The cocked gun under the desk! The warning to Joelle out of her car! She has truly embraced the Hetty of it all

10×04 Hit List – UGH MOSLEY. But I do enjoy Admiral Kilbride

10×05 Pro Se – I object to using Tiffany in that way. Also WTF is going on with Anna? Didn’t see tell Callen to tell the truth?

10×06 Asesinos – Nobody stalls like Deeks!

10×07 One of Us – What is the point of having Arkady if you only use him for five minutes? I demand more Arkady!

10×08 The Patton Project – The giving of that car made me very uncomfortable. Bad timing.

10×09 A Diamond in the Rough – I have so much love for Mama Deeks. And given that both she and Hetty were in Kindergarten Cop together, I want them to have lunch and chats.

Deep State

1×05 Bet White didn’t see that coming! Also, I hate Jones. She’s terrifying.

1×06 Meanwhile this show gets weirder and more disturbing.

The Originals (Parents first watch)

5×08 The Kindness of Strangers – Felt sorry for Elijah in this one.

5×09 We Have Not Long to Love – Freelin proposal! They loved the ring. They also felt sorry for Vincent.

5×10 There in the Disappearing Light – They were glad to see Josh with Aiden. They wondered about where the fuel for the car came from. And yay for no more Emmett!

5×11 Till the Day I Die – They loved the Freelin wedding. They were pretty peeved at Vincent and Elijah for turning Freya down (it’s her turn to have support!) but they forgave Elijah since he turned up.

5×12 The Tale of Two Wolves – They didn’t expect Alaric to crossbow Klaus! They loved Hope’s wolf and getting to see Hayley. They also loved the message for Elijah

5×13 When The Saints Go Marching In – I cried. Again.

My dog Rosie with the book "Jane Austen at Home" by Lucy Worsley
Rosie with “Jane Austen at Home” by Lucy Worsley

Jane Austen at Home – Lucy Worsley: This was a really interesting take on Jane Austen from the perspective of the places she lived. I also learned a couple of things – like me, she had facial pain, and scholars believe it likely she had depression

Around the World in 80 Trains – Monisha Rajesh: I’ve traveled long distance by train once – 6 hours from Salzburg to Venice, through a blizzard. Not something I was interested in doing, but it’s interesting to hear someone who enjoys train rides go on a journey around the world in them.

5×14 Something Better

5×15 Between the Seats – This was a sad episode

5×16 The New Normal – Thanks for breaking my heart with Gordon

5×17 The Common Defence – VACCINATE YOUR KIDS!

5×18 Ready

5×19 The Great Experiment

The Originals (Parents First Watch)

4×13 The Feast of All Sinners – How am I crying the SECOND time I watch this?

5×01 Where You Left Your Heart – They like teenage Hope. And Caroline. And Amnesia!Elijah. They felt sorry for Marcel when Rebekah turned him down. And mum was a bit peeved when Klaus started killing off the roses by visiting Amnesia!Elijah

5×02 One Wrong Turn on Bourbon – Felt so sorry for Freya. I love her friendship with Vincent. Mum was very sad about Henry.

5×03 Ne Me Quitte Pas – Mum likes Amnesia!Elijah piano-playing in France

5×04 Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea – They liked the teamup between Klaus and Marcel. And they feel Hope has a little of her father in her. They still haven’t guessed who has Hayley.

5×05 Don’t It Just Break Your Heart – Well they HATE Greta. And they were surprised by Antoinette’s and Roman’s connection to her.

5×06 What, Will, I, Have, Left – They were shocked that Declan was related to Cami!

5×07 God’s Gonna Trouble the Water – They didn’t expect the first-born curse of the Hollow. And they sincerely dislike Emmett.

Hawaii 5-0

3×14 Hana I Wa ‘Ia – So glad to know that Danny and Grace will stay together.

The Flash

3×23 Finish Line – Glad Iris and Caitlin are going to be okay. So glad we’re going to get to keep Killer Frost. I admit to shedding a tear when Barry went into the speed force with his mother.

Inspector (Kommisar) Rex

2×04 Deadly Seduction – I love how Rex is refusing to let that woman anywhere near Moser.

NCIS

16×04 Third Wheel – I don’t like Brooks horning in on my Gibbs/Fornell time. Also, Izzy can go away permanently.

NCIS Los Angeles

10×02 Superhuman – That suit is terrifying. And while I love Admiral Kilbride, I miss Hetty.

A picture of my black poodle Rosie, her toy Lamb Chop, and the book Astrid Lindgren by Jens Andersen
Rosie, Lamb Chop and Astrid Lindgren by Jens Andersen

Astrid Lindgren by Jens Andersen

The Durrells of Corfu – Michael Haag: I really liked this one because we got more information on things that Gerald didn’t write about. I had no idea that Gerry’s friend Theo studied radiology with Madame Curie! However I did not like that the author was so graphic with what happened to two of their dogs.

Himalaya – Michael Palin: Normally I love his travelogues, but this one bothered me. Not only did he ride on an elephant he watched a mahout hit an elephant with the front end of a bullhook. I really, REALLY hate that.

The Scarlet Pimpernel -Baroness Orczy: I mainly know this book from the mini series with Jane Seymour which I absolutely loved, but it was fun to finally read the book.

Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin – David Ritz: I had no idea what her life was like so this book was a real eye-opener.

Domino 1 – Gail Simone: Any comic written by Gail Simone (a redhead!) is a plus for me, so I knew I had to try this one out and I’m glad I did!

WATCHED

NCIS LA

9×13 Cac Thu Nhan

9×14 Goodbye Vietnamhaving two episodes with Hetty’s friends was such a gift and I love that Linda Hunt got a great personal storyline

9×15 Liabilities – Hetty’s back! YAY!

9×16 Warrior of Peace – Nell continues to be awesome, but I found the story morally uncomfortable. Reminds me of an episode where they killed two Iranian security guards even though they didn’t have to.

9×17 The Monster

9×18 The Vendetta

9×19 – Outside the Lines: Nell’s in the field again! Rejoice!

9×20 Reentry

9×21 Where Everybody Knows Your Name: I’m glad Deeks finally got his bar. I think this will be great.

9×22 Venganza

9×23 A Line in The Sand: I’m totally with Deeks here. Mosley’s out of control and is going to get someone killed.

9×24 Ninguna Salida: And smart money says Mosley got someone killed.

Wynonna Earp 2×6 Constant Cravings

Hawaii 5-0 2×23 Ua Hala: The minute I saw Chin checking out Doyle from jail, I knew there was going to be trouble, and I was right. Also, Dad goes “I thought Steve’s mother was dead” and I said “Yeah, well when you see what she does, we’d probably all have preferred she was.” Plus, did Rachel really think Danny wouldn’t fight for Grace? The man literally uprooted his entire life to move to Hawaii just because she was there!

Grimm

4×4 Dyin’ On a Prayer

4×5 Cry Luison

4×6 Highway of Tears

4×7 The Grimm Who Stole Christmas

4×8 Chupacabra – we fast forwarded past the dog getting killed (why do people find it necessary to put this in shows?) but we enjoyed Wu finally finding out that Nick is a Grimm.

4×9 Wesenrein -Well there’s a terrifying parallel with the Ku Klux Klan if there ever was one.

4×10 Tribunal – Dear Wesen Council – stay away from Monroe and Rosalee. Also, I loved Juliette going all Hexenbiest on the Manticore – I hope she does the same to Adalind.

4×11 Death Do Us Part

4×12 Marechausse

4×13 Trial By Fire

4×14 Bad Luck

4×15 Double Date

4×16 Heartbreaker

4×17 Hibernaculam: Well that was weird

4×18 Mishipeshu: This is just getting really weird. And Juliette is out of control

4×19 Iron Hans

4×20 You Don’t Know Jack: And this is just bizarre

Black Lightning

2×1 The Book of Consequences Chapter 1 Rise of the Green Light Babies: Look if Jennifer wants to glow and float in her sleep, let her. And what would she tell a therapist? “I can self-immolate and I like to create growing protective bubbles?” Lynn annoys me.

Lego Masters

1×4

1×5

1×6

1×7

1×8 Not commenting on that final choice. David and G should have won.

Miniature Collector

  • April 2014
  • June 2011

These were a couple of Miniature Collector magazines I picked up at a miniature’s fair ages ago and just got around to looking at (believe me, I have as many magazines piled up in the To Be Read pile as there is books). I like miniatures very much and always have, and I like seeing the different miniatures that people put in their collections.

1,411 QI Facts

My black poodle Rosie in a jacket, with the book 1,411 QI Facts to Knock You Sideways
Rosie with 1,411 QI Facts To Knock you Sideways

I am a fact junkie so this kind of thing brings me immense joy. Even better, they always include a link so that you can see the sources of the information. A researcher’s heaven

Life of the Party – Bob Kealing

This book was about Brownie Wise who became the face of Tupperware and also the way she became so high up in management, which at the time was quite unheard of for a woman. She also empowered many other women to become essentially entrepreneurs as they became party planners for Tupperware

Head in the Cloud – William

Poundstone

A great book about knowledge and how to consume it.

NCIS LA

9×6 Can I Get a Witness – love it when we get Nell in the field!

9×7 The Silo

9×8 This is What We Do – Nell is a badass

9×9 Fool Me Twice – yep, confirmed I still hate Joelle

9×10 Forasteira

9×11 All Is Bright – Christmas Nell is one of my favourite Nells. However I didn’t like in this episode that Deeks and Kensi made fun of someone who was clearly struggling while he was living with his mother. Not cool.

What I Read and Watched This Week – May 12th to 18th

Apologies for the lack of Wednesday post – I had ankle surgery and I am still recovering. I hope to get back to regular blog posts soon.

Read

National Geographic

  • April 2017
  • July 1978
  • December 1937
  • June 1964

April 2017 had a lot of interesting things about the future of human beings and the way technology can help correct problems such as colour blindness.

National Geographic History – July/August 2018

Singled Out – Bella DePaulo: Really enjoyed reading this. It’s nice to see other points of view especially when we live in a culture that prefers marriage and children over singlehood.

Watched

Grimm

3×17 Synchronicity – loved that Nick had to hold back Juliette as she went for Adalind. That whole scene was really well done.

3×18 The Law of Sacrifice

3×19 Nobody Knows The Trubel I’ve Seen – not sure they really need a new character at this point, but okay.

3×20 My Fair Wesen – still don’t really care about Trubel, but looks like we’re stuck with her for now.

Vera

I cannot tell you how much I love this show. It’s been fantastic since the beginning, but ever since they added Aiden to the show, it has just gotten better. I love watching it and I can’t wait to see more of it!

8×1 Blood and Bone

8×2 Black Ice

8×3 Home

8×4 Dark Water

NCIS LA

9×3 Assets

9×4 Plain Sight – This episode just confirmed I want to keep Harley and get rid of Mosley

9×5 Mountebank -There was one scene in this episode that just ruined it for me, and when Arkady is involved, it is very difficult to ruin an episode. But Callen’s inference that Nell had told Mosley about his alias being compromised was just insulting, to both Nell and to the audience who all KNEW Nell would never share that kind of information with Mosley. Do better, Callen. And apologise.

Black Lightning

1×13 Shadow of Death: The Book of War – well that was a season finale! So glad Jennifer decided to start using her powers – she’s so much more interesting.

Elementary

5×20 The Art of Sleights and Deception

5×21 Fly Into a Rage, Make a Bad Landing – This show is honestly one of the best in terms of character progression I have ever seen. In earlier seasons, Sherlock would NEVER have said anything about Bell being a better man, and that in fact, being a better man was more important than a better detective. We also wouldn’t have seen the apology from Bell either. I am so sorry this show is ending with Season 7 because it’s just a gem that has no equal on television.

  • November 1976

I like looking at the ads in the really old National Geographic magazines. There is an ad on one of them for telephones – before they were mainstream in everyone’s homes.

Sahara – Michael Palin

Funnily enough I like reading his travel stories but I find his diaries very boring.

Unladylike – Cristen Conger and

Caroline Ervin

This is a great book full of great ideas

The Annotated Pride and

Prejudice – Jane Austen

I love this story so much. I’ve always loved it and I enjoyed reading it again. It was good to have the annotated version because it let me understand a few things that I hadn’t before. For example, I always thought that traveling by post was related to the mail, but in fact it is about traveling with hired horses that change at “posts”. I also didn’t realise the significance of Darcy calling her “Elizabeth” in their walk together – because Darcy is so formal and it was not a done thing at the time between people who were not intimate. I cannot recommend the novel enough, and I really enjoyed the annotated version.

Watched:

NCIS Los Angeles

8×21 Battle Scars – Hetty’s friends are awesome. I especially love AJ Chegwidden and I wish he was permanent.

8×22 Golden Days – More of Hetty’s friends and I loved the toast to Owen at the end.

8×23 Uncaged – Could tell they were going to kill off Michelle as soon as she appeared in the episode. Haven’t seen so much of her since she went up against Sidorov

8×24 Unleashed – more badass Nell! And the thumbs up and the grin – so glad that went into the Season 9 credits

9×1 Party Crashers – Hate Mosley. Sort of indifferent to Harley – I can’t work out what her job is apart from being a PA for Mosley? Also so glad they’re letting Linda Hunt flex her acting muscle

9×2 Se Murio El Payaso – LOVE that Jeff Kober is playing the imprisoned CIA officer in Vietnam, especially after watching him as an American sergeant fighting during the Vietnam War in China Beach

Black Lightning

1×11 Black Jesus: The Book of Crucifixion – loved watching Thunder and Hologram!Black Lightning getting applause as they ran down the road. I feel that was really awesome for the people of Freeland to experience.

Arrow:

5×13 Spectre of the Gun – Liked getting the backstory to Rene’s life.

Rizzoli and Isles:

7×7 Dead Weight – Really liked this episode. I even liked the FBI guy that asked Jane to come to give the talk to Quantico

Wynonna Earp:

2×4 She Ain’t Right – No joke she ain’t right. And now Wynonna ain’t right. This should be interesting.

Legends of Tomorrow

2×12 Camelot/3000 – Sara Lance, flirting her way through history.

Inspector Soneri Fog and Crimes 2:

False Papers

Grimm:

3×11 The Good Soldier

3×12 The Wild Hunt

3×13 Revelation

3×14 Mommy Dearest – I cannot begin to say on how many levels I disagreed with the characters to not tell Sergeant Wu about the Wesen. The man has checked himself into a mental health ward – that’s EXACTLY the time to tell him about Wesen and that he isn’t crazy.

Really enjoyed the article in the November 1983 issue about restoring the Last Supper and what the restoration revealed.

The Uncommon Reader – Alan Bennett

This is an interesting little book. It involves the Queen finding a travelling library on her back lawn, and how she becomes so interested in books that she starts ignoring her other jobs.

My Life With Bob – Pamela Paul

It’s so nice to find someone else who keeps a log of every book she reads. Mine is on my computer (simply because writing can be painful with fibromyalgia) and I keep list along with whether I finished it and whether I liked it or not. This was a great travel through the books and experiences that shaped her life.

I’m going to miss this show, because Gail was my favourite character. I was annoyed that they took Holly away – that would have made the last season perfect. So glad Oliver still has Celery – she’s so good for him. I loved Gail in the final scene, standing up the front like Oliver’s enforcer.

I still find it interesting that every single character has progressed throughout the series…except Andy McNally. She showed in the last two episodes that she’s exactly the same as in the pilot. Everyone else (including Duncan/Gerald) has progressed.

So…big thumbs up to training boss Gail and her place as Oliver’s right hand-woman (guns and shoes!), but big thumbs down for dropping Holly out of the show. Not going to forgive for that one, showrunners.
