Sorry again for another double-up, but we had an unexpected loss in the family. Some of these are episodes I’ve watched before, but we’re rewatching for Christmas.
How to Make Money With Social Media – Jamie Turner and Reshma Shah:Interesting, but not something I’m really into exploring at the moment
Nine Pints – Rose George: This was absolutely fascinating and a little terrifying at the same time. I’ve noticed I read a lot of books like that this fortnight.
Twisted 26 – Janet Evanovich: This was great, and I loved having so much Grandma Mazur in it. She’s so much fun.
Daring to Drive – Manal Al-Sharif:This was interesting and terrifying at the same time.
Women and Power – Mary Beard: Taken from her lectures, this was an interesting read that looked at women’s power right back in the Western canon of literature.
The Witches Are Coming – Lindy West: I loved this book and it was so interesting
The Joyful Frugalista – Serina Bird:Got some helpful tips from this book – not often you find one of these types of books that focuses on Australia.
4×01 The Flash Reborn: Such a good episode
NCIS Los Angeles
11×05 Provenance: One of the funniest episodes they’ve ever done. When Sam picked up the art thief and she just kept running – we couldn’t stop laughing!
11×06 A Bloody Brilliant Plan: Loved seeing Jennifer Kim again
11×07 Concours D’Elegance – love Nell and Fatima. Liked seeing Katherine again.
11×08 Human Resources
3×17 Pa’ani: Loved this episode. The show is at its best like this.
2×07 Dangerous Hunt: Rex saves the day again!
6×10 Leaving the Station: Now THIS is the show I’ve been missing. The wedding was perfect. Bringing everyone back was great (still missed Kat and Nadine). So glad to see Chen there too. This is the show we missed. I’m just sorry it took until the last two episodes of the final season to see it again.
16×08 Friendly Fire
According to Jeff Goldblum
1×03 Tattoos: I didn’t know about tattoos and the immune system, so now I’m even more freaked out about them.
Hercule Poirot and the Theft of the Royal Ruby
First Christmas program of the season.
Hercule Poirot’s Christmas
These are great little programs
The Addams Family
This is the 1990s version and the best. We always watch this at Christmas.
2×15 Curve Ball – Christmas episodes! I love these dorks.
1×10 Brimstone – I can’t believe how young they all are. It was nice seeing Nate and more of Hetty.
2×11 Disorder – Nell and Hetty are excellent together.
3×11 Higher Power – Nell and Hetty are the gift that keeps on giving.
4×10 Free Ride – Nell is elfin awesome
5×12 Merry Evasion – Nellverine in the field!
2×09 The Map of Moments – I love this episode, even though we only get a glimpse of Freya.
6×11 Silent Night
8×10 False Witness – Tony’s prank at the end gets me every time!
1×12 Hana a’a Makehewa
2×13 Secret Santa – I love these dorks
3×14 Next of Kin
3×15 Next of Kin Part 2
6×13 Living Proof Part 1
6×14 Living Proof Part 2 – It’s fun watching Flynn and Raydor interact before they’re together
1×07 Let Your Hair Down – First look at Monroe’s epic Christmas decorations
Uncommon Grounds – Mark Pendergast Loved this book and the history of coffee. As well as the history of how coffee made its way around the world, it also includes the history of the advertising that accompanied it and it’s interesting to see it and how unacceptable some of it would be now.
Feminists Don’t Wear Pink and Other Lies – Scarlett Curtis Great little book of essays from famous people on feminism. Particular favourite was Karen Gillan’s story of her mum protecting the little redhead with pale skin – been there!
Grimm: The Icy Touch – John Shirley Better than the last one, but still not up to the standards of the show.
The Book Smugglers of Timbuktu – Charlie English It was amazing to read about not only the people that saved the ancient manuscripts from destruction, but the history of traveling to the area.
Griffith Review 64 – The New Disruptors
1×13 Crescent City
1×14 Long Way Back Home
1×15 Le Grand Guignol
1×16 Farewell to Storyville
1×17 Moon Over Bourbon Street
1×18 The Big Uneasy: I hate Genevieve. On so many different levels.
1×19 An Unblinking Death
1×20 A Closer Walk With Thee Helijah. Genevieve improved on me momentarily. Also, Oliver is evil.
1×21 The Battle of New Orleans More Helijah. I feel we’re being spoilt so something will stop this soon, I am sure of it.
1×22 From a Cradle to a Grave What a bloodbath! But so pleased Genevieve is gone. Not so pleased that Oliver still lives…but give it time.
2×01 Rebirth Finally got rid of Francesca. FINALLY. And I knew the Helijah was too good to last. I love that the actors ship this too.
2×02 Alive and Kicking Seriously, if everyone stopped keeping secrets (Hello, Elijah), half this stuff wouldn’t happen
2×08 Lights Out
2×09 Russian Roulette
2×10 The Greater Good
2×11 Unity Node
2×12 The Middle Way
2×13 Invasive Species
2×14 Left of the Boom
2×15 Right of the Boom
2×16 Hijriyyah A much better job for Henry. Honestly, does no one think of the children?
2×17 Higher Learning
Legends of Tomorrow
1×8 Bring Me Beethoven’s Head: I cannot believe the number of people who want to steal Beethoven’s head!
2×01 Olivia Dunham is back (yes, that is what we now call her in everything) and she’s eying a lady bartender. All is right with the world. As long as she and Tench can keep Holden in line.
The Killing Time – Tim Waggoner: This is one of the books based on the television show Grimm which I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, the book did not live up to the writing of the show.
The Killer Across the Table – John Douglas and Mark Olshaker: I really love the books these two bring out because they are so interesting. This included a lot of cases I had never heard of but it involved a much more in-depth look at the way the behavioural science unit worked.
Once and Future – Amy Rose Capeton: A gender-bending LGBTQ take on the King Arthur tale.
Born Standing Up – Steve Martin: I found this very slim pickings about his life and how he got to where he is.
1×19 Spartan Figures
1×20 The Necessary Art
1×21 The Kill List
1×22 There But For The Grace of God
2×01 The Show Must Go On
2×02 The Doability Doctrine: I love that Madeline Albright and the other secretaries of state do lunch. I’d love to be a guest at one of those lunches! Also, I would personally have quit after the President went back on his word. I could never trust someone who did that.
2×03 The Rusalka: Some dodgy behaviour on behalf of Dr McCord here
2×04 Waiting for Taleju: I KNEW we’d get a slutshaming storyline at some point, and here it is.
2×05 The Long Shot
2×06 Catch and Release
2×07 You Say You Want a Revolution
1×5 Deadly Teddies
1×6 Dance on the Volcano
1×7 First Prize
1×01 Always and Forever
1×02 House of the Rising Son
1×03 Tangled Up in Blue
1×04 Girl in New Orleans
1×05 Sinners and Saints
1×06 Fruit of the Poisoned Tree
1×08 The River in Reverse
1×09 Reigning Pain in New Orleans
1×10 The Casket Girls: Helijah love.
1×11 Apres Moi, Le Deluge: I seriously thought that Harvest would work. But now Celeste is on a rampage. Can’t wait till she comes face to face with Elijah
1×12 Dance Back from the Grave: Papa Tunde is creepy and as much as I don’t like snakes, throwing one on a bonfire while it is alive is rude
Carlo and Malik
1×04 Una Notte Senza Stelle
1×06 Per Amore: Not going to watch this show anymore. It’s really getting a little melodramatic
5×19 Dangerous Liaisons: Oh Felicity, I feel you have made a grave error with Helix. I don’t trust these hackers. Especially Alena. She’s shifty
This is a great book that looks at all the daily rituals from some of the most creative people. This includes writer, artists, composers, philosophers and more. I really enjoyed reading it – it is something that you can use to discover what would help you in your own creative pursuits – whether it is a rigid schedule, or a peculiar one.
The Soul of an Octopus – Sy Montgomery
Not knowing much about octopuses, I found this an intriguing read. These creatures are so intelligent that in aquariums they are given complex puzzles and Lego’s to play with so they don’t get bored. I was shocked to find they only live four or five years – a male dies directly after copulation and a female dies when her eggs are hatched.
1, 342 QI Facts
I love fact lists and the geeky researcher in me loves that in these QI books they are all backed up by actual information you can access yourself. I only wish they’d done more of these books!
Inspector Soneri: Fog and Crimes 3 – Hard Times: The introduction of the little girl is a new twist. I’m also intrigued by Soneri’s new love interest, because a) Angela annoyed me and b) this one might give him a run for his money, but he was just a tad forward with her – seriously, going to kiss her in the elevator – take a woman to dinner first!
6×06 Breakfast in Bed
6×07 Blind Love – Hank was HILARIOUS in this episode.
6×08 The Son Also Rises
Arrow 5×17 Kapiushon
Wynonna Earp 2×09 Forever Mine, Nevermind
Legends of Tomorrow
2×15 Fellowship of the Spear – Ray cackling in the German’s cannon and spinning around to make it face them was just GOLD. I hope they are all going to be nice to my boy Rory now – he’s one of our favourite characters!
Rizzoli and Isles
7×11 Stiffed – As the series comes to an end, I’m finding myself missing the earlier seasons. Something has shifted and although I love the Frankie/Nina stories, I miss those old seasons.
Kommisar (Inspector) Rex
1×03 The Body at Schonbrunn: As someone who has been to Schonbrunn in the middle of winter – NOT MY IDEA – I almost didn’t recognise the place without it being covered in snow.
Elementary – 6×03 Pushing Buttons
The Blacklist 4×20 The Debt Collector (No.46)
3×18 Abra Kadabra: Ah, Barry? Travelling through time never ends well with you. I feel this is a monumentally bad decision
Wordsmith’s and Warriors – David and Hilary Crystal
This book was a travel through Great Britain looking at how the English language formed and the famous (and not so famous) places that are associated with this formation.
1,234 QI Facts to Leave You Speechless
More facts! I love random facts.
Notes on a Nervous Planet – Matt Haig
This is a book about living with anxiety in the modern age.
Dinner with Churchill – Cita Steltzer
Churchill did his best negotiating and dealmaking over food, and this is a great look at some of the important meals he had and the favourite foods and drinks he liked.
5×07 – Eve of Destruction – No joke, she is far more interesting and fun as Eve than she ever was as Juliette
5×08 – A Reptile Dysfunction
5×09 – Star-Crossed
5×10 – Map of the Seven Knights
5×11 – Key Move
5×12 Into the Schwarzwald
5×13 Silence of the Slams
3×1 La O Na Makuhine
Wynonna Earp – 2×07 Everybody Knows
Arrow – 5×15 Fighting Fire With Fire
Legends of Tomorrow – 2×13 Land of the Lost
Rizzoli and Isles – 7×09 65 Hours
Kommisar Rex (Inspector Rex)
1×1 Pilot – We are watching this show from the start again because we really love it. Only the seasons in Austria – we tried the seasons in Italy and didn’t like them – they killed a dog so that was it for us.
Born to Drum – Tony Barrell: I LOVE to drum. I learnt in high school and I was quite good – I won two competitions and I was able to learn things by listening to them. Unfortunately fibromyalgia means that drumming is now very painful, but I still like to read about it and listen to other drummers play.
Landwhale – Jes Baker: Really great book. Very personal story but lots of things resonate
1,339 QI Facts
4×22 Cry Havoc: Points to Trubel for finally knocking Juliette off
5×01 The Grimm Identity:Adalind has become remarkably less annoying as time goes on.
4×17 Requiem – Are we to assume that Kate’s version of the fire is the real version?
5×22 Moving Targets
5×24 Hurt Me, Hurt You That reveal that the woman that has been kind of stalking Sherlock is all in his head was such a huge twist that I never saw coming. These writers constantly hit it out of the park!
It’s a special double issue this week because the ankle surgery has left me feeling a bit worn out. Enjoy.
Astrid Lindgren by Jens Andersen
The Durrells of Corfu – Michael Haag: I really liked this one because we got more information on things that Gerald didn’t write about. I had no idea that Gerry’s friend Theo studied radiology with Madame Curie! However I did not like that the author was so graphic with what happened to two of their dogs.
Himalaya – Michael Palin: Normally I love his travelogues, but this one bothered me. Not only did he ride on an elephant he watched a mahout hit an elephant with the front end of a bullhook. I really, REALLY hate that.
The Scarlet Pimpernel -Baroness Orczy: I mainly know this book from the mini series with Jane Seymour which I absolutely loved, but it was fun to finally read the book.
Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin – David Ritz: I had no idea what her life was like so this book was a real eye-opener.
Domino 1 – Gail Simone: Any comic written by Gail Simone (a redhead!) is a plus for me, so I knew I had to try this one out and I’m glad I did!
9×13 Cac Thu Nhan
9×14 Goodbye Vietnam – having two episodes with Hetty’s friends was such a gift and I love that Linda Hunt got a great personal storyline
9×15 Liabilities – Hetty’s back! YAY!
9×16 Warrior of Peace – Nell continues to be awesome, but I found the story morally uncomfortable. Reminds me of an episode where they killed two Iranian security guards even though they didn’t have to.
9×17 The Monster
9×18 The Vendetta
9×19 – Outside the Lines: Nell’s in the field again! Rejoice!
9×21 Where Everybody Knows Your Name: I’m glad Deeks finally got his bar. I think this will be great.
9×23 A Line in The Sand: I’m totally with Deeks here. Mosley’s out of control and is going to get someone killed.
Hawaii 5-0 2×23 Ua Hala: The minute I saw Chin checking out Doyle from jail, I knew there was going to be trouble, and I was right. Also, Dad goes “I thought Steve’s mother was dead” and I said “Yeah, well when you see what she does, we’d probably all have preferred she was.” Plus, did Rachel really think Danny wouldn’t fight for Grace? The man literally uprooted his entire life to move to Hawaii just because she was there!
4×4 Dyin’ On a Prayer
4×5 Cry Luison
4×6 Highway of Tears
4×7 The Grimm Who Stole Christmas
4×8 Chupacabra – we fast forwarded past the dog getting killed (why do people find it necessary to put this in shows?) but we enjoyed Wu finally finding out that Nick is a Grimm.
4×9 Wesenrein -Well there’s a terrifying parallel with the Ku Klux Klan if there ever was one.
4×10 Tribunal – Dear Wesen Council – stay away from Monroe and Rosalee. Also, I loved Juliette going all Hexenbiest on the Manticore – I hope she does the same to Adalind.
4×11 Death Do Us Part
4×13 Trial By Fire
4×14 Bad Luck
4×15 Double Date
4×17 Hibernaculam: Well that was weird
4×18 Mishipeshu: This is just getting really weird. And Juliette is out of control
4×19 Iron Hans
4×20 You Don’t Know Jack: And this is just bizarre
2×1 The Book of Consequences Chapter 1 Rise of the Green Light Babies: Look if Jennifer wants to glow and float in her sleep, let her. And what would she tell a therapist? “I can self-immolate and I like to create growing protective bubbles?” Lynn annoys me.
1×8 Not commenting on that final choice. David and G should have won.
Rizzoli and Isles
7×8 ZM7258-100: I know where this show is heading, and I’m not too happy.
These were a couple of Miniature Collector magazines I picked up at a miniature’s fair ages ago and just got around to looking at (believe me, I have as many magazines piled up in the To Be Read pile as there is books). I like miniatures very much and always have, and I like seeing the different miniatures that people put in their collections.
1,411 QI Facts
I am a fact junkie so this kind of thing brings me immense joy. Even better, they always include a link so that you can see the sources of the information. A researcher’s heaven
Life of the Party – Bob Kealing
This book was about Brownie Wise who became the face of Tupperware and also the way she became so high up in management, which at the time was quite unheard of for a woman. She also empowered many other women to become essentially entrepreneurs as they became party planners for Tupperware
Head in the Cloud – William
A great book about knowledge and how to consume it.
3×21 The Inheritance
3×22 Blonde Ambition
4×1 Thanks for the Memories – Louise Lombard has arrived so everything is awesome
4×2 Octopus Head
4×3 The Last Fight – Louise is so awesome in this
2×22 Ua Hopu
2×5 Let’s Pretend We’re Strangers
2×9 And the Happily Ever Afters
3×14 Attack on Central City – I cannot stress how much I love Cisco.
9×6 Can I Get a Witness – love it when we get Nell in the field!
9×7 The Silo
9×8 This is What We Do – Nell is a badass
9×9 Fool Me Twice – yep, confirmed I still hate Joelle
9×11 All Is Bright – Christmas Nell is one of my favourite Nells. However I didn’t like in this episode that Deeks and Kensi made fun of someone who was clearly struggling while he was living with his mother. Not cool.
9×12 Under Pressure
I love Lego, and Brickman is very talented, but some of his judging decisions have been a little bizarre. However I really felt for him when he almost cried having to send the first team home.
